Wimbledon Embraces Video Challenge Technology for the First Time.

The Championships court with replay technology

The tournament joins the American and Aussie Opens in implementing video review technology.

Video review technology are set to arrive at The Championships for the 2025 edition.

Competitors will gain the option to question specific decisions made by the chair umpire, mirroring the protocol currently in place at both the US Open and the Australian Open.

This innovation will be accessible on the main stadium and Court One throughout the tournament and on the remaining show courts when they are hosting singles contests.

This move follows just a season following the AELTC introduced electronic line calling, which effectively ended the 147-year tradition of line officials.

Reviewable Decisions

Players cannot to dispute the accuracy of the electronic line calling, but they can ask for the umpire to re-examine specific decisions, including:

  • If a tennis ball has bounced twice.
  • If a ball touched an rival's racket or body during play.
  • Possible interference at the conclusion of a point.

Notably, there will be no cap on the amount of reviews a player can initiate.

Practical Application

An illustrative incident occurred in a recent tournament last week, where a top player used the video challenge against Jack Draper.

The British player conceded it was a tough situation for the official, but believed his rival had "used the regulations effectively."

Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a replay and ruled the player was responsible for interference, granting the point to his opponent.

Broader Adoption

This technology aren't new for major tournaments. It has been in use at the American major since 2023 and the Australian Open since 2025.

Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by next season the ATP circuit will have the system implemented at every one of its events.

Other Changes

Another change at The Championships this year involves the introduction of graphical cues on displays to complement the verbal announcements from the ELC system.

This addresses instances where fans have occasionally been uncertain whether a shot was in or out.

In other news, with precisely a century of days remaining until the beginning of the Championships, the AELTC have also announced an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
