Weather balloons transporting thousands of packs of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was compelled to shut down for several hours when dozens of them entered the national airspace.
Air Travel Interruptions
The airport closure led to the cancellation of 30 flights affecting thousands of passengers, with officials warning that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Officials confirmed that multiple atmospheric balloons were detected entering Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with two of which ending up precisely above the main terminal.
Approximately 14 of the atmospheric instruments sent during the weekend passed through the capital region, which is situated near Lithuania's main urban center and near the frontier with Belarus.
Contraband Recovery
At least 11 balloons containing numerous containers of contraband smoking materials have now been retrieved, though more recoveries are anticipated, according to border security officials.
International Illegal Trade
Despite the disruption, representatives clarified that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - Belarusian smoking products - are not unusual in neighboring countries."
So far this year, over five hundred weather devices have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been documented the previous year.
Cross-Border Effects
Meanwhile, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which also borders Belarus, has recorded more than one hundred incidents in which contraband was flown from its neighbor using the weather devices.
Illegal Transport Methods
In response to questions about why criminals use a method that is particularly vulnerable to weather elements rather than more controllable drones, officials clarified that "Meteorological balloons are simple mechanisms used by contraband transporters - they are less expensive than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Law Enforcement Objectives
Officials added that "Our services' aim is to capture the greatest possible quantities of contraband and to arrest masterminds and perpetrators so that this activity become unprofitable and do not pose risk to civil aviation."
European Tensions
The recent incidents occur during a period of growing anxiety in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have created aviation problems across European nations.
Parallel situations in neighboring countries have caused EU officials to fast-track conversations about improving airspace protection throughout European airspace.
